Legal Notice - Board of Appeal and Equalization

Notice is hereby given that the Board of Appeal and Equalization for the City of Porter shall meet on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Porter Fire Hall. The purpose of this meeting is to determine whether taxable property in the jurisdiction has been properly valued and classified by the assessor, and to determine whether corrections need to be made.

 

If you believe the value or classification of your property is incorrect, please contact your assessor's office to discuss your concerns. If you are still not satisfied with the valuation or classification after discussing it with your assessor, you may appear before the local board of appeal and equalization. The board shall review the valuation, classification, or both if necessary, and shall correct it as needed. Generally, an appearance before your local board of appeal and equalization is required by law before an appeal can be taken to the county board of appeal and equalization.

 

April Porter City Council Meeting Date and Time Changed

The April meeting of the City Council will be held on April 8 at 7:00 PM. The Board of Appeals and Equalization Meeting will be held from 6:30 - 7:00 PM on April 8.

Porter Fire Relief Association Bingo Continues

Porter Fire Relief's annual winter-time Bingo continues with a $1,000 Grand Prize Jackpot on the line! Bingo is held every other Thursday beginning at 7:00 at Cut Loose Lounge in Porter. Here are the next Bingo dates:

Funeral Services for Long-Time Porter Resident Elizabeth "Liz" Kubiszewski

Liz KubiszewskiElizabeth “Liz” Kubiszewski, age 87, of Canby, passed away Thursday, April 16, 2015 at the Sylvan Court Nursing Home in Canby.

Memorial mass will be 10:30 am on Tuesday, April 21st at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with Father Craig Timmerman as the Celebrant. Visitation will be one hour prior to the mass at the church. Inurnment will be in Marble Lutheran Cemetery at a later date.

Elizabeth Marie Hauser was born January 9, 1928 in New Ulm, MN, the daughter of Charles & Mary (Sperl) Hauser. She married Paul Kubiszewski on May 21, 1946 in New Ulm at the Holy Trinity Cathedral Church. She became the mother to 13 children: Mary Ann, Paul, Ronald, Rose Ann, Bonnie, Richard, Gerald, Brenda, Susanna, Lori, Chari, Patrick & Judy. Paul and Liz were married 60 years and Liz was Catholic her entire life.

After the death of her son Patrick, she developed her sewing skills into a business of making and selling over a thousand decorative pillows to deal with her grief. Liz has been a resident of Porter for many years.

Liz’s legacy was being a mother to 13 children; 26 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She is survived by one sister, Shirley. Preceding her in death was her parents; 10 siblings; son, Patrick; granddaughter, Emily and husband, Paul.

Funeral Services for Long Time Porter Resident Donna Verschelde

Donna VerscheldeDonna Marie (Kontz) Verschelde was born on August 6, 1935, in Elkton, SD. She grew up, one of nine children of Arnold and Loretta (Galles) Kontz, on the family farm near Gary, SD. On July 12, 1954, she was united in marriage to Donald Verschelde in Gary. The couple lived near Minneota for a time before moving to Porter where they raised their family. Donna worked as a nanny for a few years for the Harvey and Maggie Wollum family before taking employment with Schott’s in Minneota where she worked for over 20 years. Donna was an excellent mother and her primary focus was her kids and later her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She continued providing loving care to them, for many years alone after her husband died at a young age. She was a devoted member of St. Edward Catholic Church and her faith was very important to her. Donna also enjoyed playing cards, watching tv and spending time at home.

Donna died on Monday, April 20, 2015, at the Sanford Healthcare Center in Sioux Falls, SD, after a brief illness.

She is survived by her children Julie Bottelberghe of Minneota, Donald Jr. (and Nona) Verschelde of Porter, Judy (and Lance) Tomiczek of Converse, TX, Connie Tomiczek of Chaska, Dan (and Judy) Verschelde of Porter, grandchildren Jeremy (and Nicole), Matt (and Tessa), Angela (and Brad), Heather (and Bill), Kelly (and Adam), Laura (and Jeremy), Megan (and Marty), Lance Jr., and Andrew, 17 great-grandchildren and two on the way, siblings Clary (and John) Keimig of Prior Lake, Dale Kontz of Minneota, Betty (and Greg) Dephilippis of Mira Loma, CA, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Donald, son-in-law Harold, siblings Laurel (and Mary), Bob (and Elaine), Frank (and Leola), Marjorie (and Lyle) and infant brother Wayne.

 

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 24 from 4:00 - 8:00 PM at St. Edward Catholic Church in Minneota, MN with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Visitation will resume from 8:30 - 10:30 AM on Saturday, April 25 at the Rehkamp-Horvath Funeral Home in Minneota. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 25 at St. Edward Catholic Church in Minneota. Internment will be held at Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Cemetery in Taunton.

Porter Jail Featured in October 1 Minneota Mascot

The historic Porter Jail is featured this week in the Minneota Mascot. The article includes interviews with lifelong Porter resident Mavis Anderson as well as Porter native John Bruns who was involved in the restoration of the historic site in 1993. Copies of the Mascot are available weekly at the Porter Cafe.

Funeral Services for Porter Resident Jeanie Ann Hatletvedt

Jeanie HatletvedtPorter resident Jeanie Ann Hatletvedt passed away on Sunday, December 6, 2015 at Sanford Canby Hospital. Funeral Services celebrating the life of Jeanie will take place at 11:00 AM on Friday, December 11 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Porter. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM on December 11 at the Church and internment will be at the Wergland Cemetery of rural Porter following the service.

 

Jeanie Ann Hatletvedt was born in Pipestone, Minnesota, the first daughter of Vernon and Laura (Yackley) Mouw. She grew up on the family farm north of Canby. She was united in marriage to David Hatletvedt on August 17, 1957 and to this union three children were born, Darrin, Laurie, and Harold.

After graduating from high school, Jeanie married David and they worked on the Hatletvedt family farm near Porter. In 1975, she worked for three years as a nursing assistant at the Canby Hospital. In 1978, she graduated from LPN school at Southeast Area Vocational at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD (now called Sanford Hospital). She worked at the Canby Hospital and Nursing Home, the Minneota Manor and the Clarkfield Care Center until she retired.

Jeanie enjoyed gardening, flowers, playing with her best puppy companion, Brady and if she could, she would play cards day and night. She enjoyed traveling with Merv to Hawaii, North Carolina, Key West, Black Hills, California, Missouri, and more places too numerous to mention.

She will be missed by her two children, Darrin Hatletvedt (Cheryl) of Montevideo, MN, Laurie (Jason) Job of Auburn, CA; three granddaughters, Alexandra (Matt) Lunsford and Samantha Job of Auburn, CA, Amanda Hatletvedt (fiance’, Jesse Warnke) of Porter, MN; one grandson, Justin Hatletvedt (fiance’, Sami) of Chaska, MN; beloved partner, Merv Anderson of Porter, MN; and all of his family; one brother, Lynn Mouw (Lois) of Dunn, NC; three nieces, Jill (John) Pruden, Carrie Mouw, Cassie (John) Hannan; one nephew, Todd Siverhus; two step-granddaughters, Nichole Knutson and Heather Knutson, and one great-grandson, Jaxon Knutson.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Vernon and Laura Mouw; husband, David; son, Harold; sister, Deanna Siverhus; brother, Jerry Mouw.
